Keller Urges Affected Farmers to Complete Surveys
12/17/2010

Rep. Fred Keller (R-Union/Snyder) today encouraged local farmers in the 85th District to take part in two important surveys that will help guide future agriculture policies on both the state and federal levels.

The first survey, which is being conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, will randomly select more than 600 farmers in Pennsylvania and ask them for information about their operating expenditures, production costs and household characteristics.

Known as the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS), farmers will be contacted between Jan. 28 and April 14, 2011. In total, nearly 35,000 farmers nationwide will supply data.

“In order for both state and federal policies and programs to reflect the needs of the agriculture industry, the USDA seeks out information from those who know their operations best – local farmers,” Keller said. “Because accurate and reliable information is an important part of developing policies and directing resources in the right areas, I encourage farmers who are contacted to complete the surveys.”

At the state level, the USDA’s Pennsylvania Field Office will be surveying cattle farmers for its largest cattle survey from Dec. 30 through Jan. 11, 2011. Operators of cattle farms in Pennsylvania will be asked the total number of cattle and calves as of Jan. 1, 2011, as well as the total number of heifers, steers, milk cows and beef cows.

Keller reminded farmers that federal law protects all information gathered by these surveys. All data – especially names, addresses and information about individual farm operations – must be kept confidential.

Results of the cattle survey will be made available on Jan. 28, 2011, and the data gathered in ARMS will be published on Aug. 2, 2011.  Both reports will be accessible by visiting the NASS website at nass.usda.gov.

For questions or concerns regarding both surveys, farmers may contact NASS by calling 1-800-727-9540.
