Keller Reacts to State Tax Equalization Board Audit

Rep. Fred Keller (R-Union/Snyder) today issued his reaction to the auditor general’s findings regarding the audit of the State Tax Equalization Board (STEB) which was called for by former Rep. Russ Fairchild in 2010.

“This is a good report and it identifies there was clear incompetence of the people who did the calculations,” said Keller.  “This report shows that people at the STEB need to go.”

Fairchild had called for an audit after learning that STEB miscalculated property market values in White Deer Township, Union County, which is located in the Milton Area School District.  Following the discovery of those miscalculations, Warrior Run School District, which is located in Union and Northumberland counties, sought to have its calculations reviewed, and, once again, STEB calculations were determined to be in error.

The audit showed a 65 percent error rate in a review of records from 70 municipalities.  Auditor General Jack Wagner determined that the majority of errors were a result of a flawed computer system and human error.  Wagner also said that the errors are significant enough that they could result in unnecessary tax increases in some school districts and municipalities.

“I will work to make sure things are made right with the local school districts,” noted Keller.  “Obviously, if some of the values were wrong, some school districts were overpaid and others were underpaid, leaving the local taxpayer to bear the burden.

“The bottom line is that the proper steps need to be taken in order to ensure that this type of situation is avoided in the future,” said Keller.
